Vice President Kashim Shettima has reiterated the Federal Government’s resolve to address humanitarian challenges across the country through sustained collaboration with development partners and key stakeholders.

The Vice President made this known on Tuesday while receiving a delegation from the International Committee of the Red Cross, led by Ms. Doris El Doueihy, at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

He stated that the administration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu remains committed to strengthening humanitarian interventions by engaging organisations such as the ICRC to address gaps in response efforts nationwide.

“It is only when we continue engaging with organisations like the Red Cross that we can address some of the grey areas in our humanitarian responses across the country,” Shettima said.

The Vice President commended the ICRC for its professionalism and dedication, particularly in conflict-affected regions, and welcomed its proposal to establish a national mechanism for humanitarian response in Nigeria. He assured that the Federal Government is ready to collaborate in developing and implementing such a framework, especially in addressing the needs of victims of armed conflict.

Shettima also reaffirmed that Nigeria’s security forces will continue to operate in line with international standards and best practices.

Earlier, Ms. El Doueihy praised Nigeria for domesticating the Kampala Convention, describing the country as a leader in humanitarian policy across Africa.

She noted that the visit was aimed at strengthening the long-standing relationship between Nigeria and the ICRC, highlighting the organisation’s ongoing support in critical areas such as healthcare, water provision, and capacity building for security personnel.

Also present at the meeting was the President of the Nigerian Red Cross Society, Prince Oluyemisi Adetayo Adeaga, alongside other officials.

The engagement underscores Nigeria’s renewed focus on coordinated humanitarian action and its commitment to protecting vulnerable populations across the country.
