Single at 25 in Denmark? You Might Get Covered in Cinnamon
In Denmark, turning 25 while unmarried can come with an unusual birthday surprise: being tied to a chair or lamppost and covered from head to toe in cinnamon.
The playful tradition is not required by law and is not practised by everyone, but it remains a popular and humorous custom among some Danish friends and families.
The tradition is believed to have historical links to Denmark’s spice-trading past. Centuries ago, travelling spice merchants often spent long periods away from home and were less likely to marry. Such unmarried men were sometimes referred to as “pebersvend,” roughly translated as “pepper fellow” or “spice bachelor.”
Over time, the association between unmarried spice merchants and spices evolved into the colourful birthday prank seen today.
And turning 25 is apparently only the beginning.
If someone reaches 30 while still unmarried, friends may take the joke a step further by replacing cinnamon with black pepper—a much stronger and more pungent spice.
Celebrations can involve tying the birthday celebrant to a chair, pole or other safe structure before covering them with the spice. Friends may also use water to help the cinnamon stick to clothing, while some celebrants wear old clothes and protective goggles to avoid irritation.
Despite how dramatic the tradition may appear, it is generally intended as good-natured teasing rather than a serious social punishment.
Interestingly, Denmark has relatively high ages for marriage compared with many countries, meaning plenty of people reach their late 20s and early 30s unmarried.
So, in Denmark, being single at 25 may not mean you need to worry about finding a spouse immediately.
You may simply need to prepare for a very spicy birthday.
