Troops foil drug and fuel smuggling in Lagos

The Nigerian Army troops, in collaboration with the Nigerian Customs Service, foiled two smuggling attempts in Badagry, Lagos state, on Saturday, seizing sacks of illegal drugs and petroleum motor spirit.

The troops, operating under the 81 Division of the Nigerian Army, acted on intelligence reports and launched a covert operation at Ajido, where they intercepted two boats loaded with 27 sacks of substances believed to be drugs. The smugglers escaped by jumping into the river when they saw the troops approaching.

In another operation at Fabre, the troops stopped a group of smugglers carrying 77 sacks of petroleum motor spirit, also known as petrol or gasoline, which is often smuggled across the border to neighbouring countries where it is sold at higher prices.

The seized drugs were handed over to the Nigeria Drug Law Enforcement Agency, while the fuel was handed over to the Nigerian Customs Service, both at Seme border.

The General Officer Commanding 81 Division, Maj Gen MT Usman, praised the troops for their professionalism and urged the public to cooperate with the security agencies by providing credible information to prevent any criminal activities that could disrupt the peace and security in Lagos and Ogun states.
