The United States Trade and Development Agency (USTDA) has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the deployment of American liquefied natural gas (LNG) technology to expand energy access and strengthen industrial development in Northern Nigeria.

According to a statement issued by the U.S. Embassy in Abuja, the USTDA has approved a grant for Powergas Nigeria Limited to finance a feasibility study for the development of a small-scale Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) plant in southern Nigeria.

The proposed facility is expected to produce LNG for transportation to industrial clusters and underserved communities across Northern Nigeria using virtual pipeline trucks, a system designed to deliver natural gas to locations without access to conventional gas pipeline infrastructure.

The U.S. Embassy noted that the project is aimed at improving energy security, expanding access to cleaner energy and supporting economic activities in areas where reliable gas supply remains limited.

USTDA Deputy Director Thomas Hardy said the initiative would address critical energy challenges while creating new opportunities for American companies to participate in Nigeria’s growing energy sector.

According to Hardy, the project reflects the agency’s continued commitment to promoting sustainable infrastructure development and strengthening commercial partnerships between the United States and Nigeria.

Also speaking, Powergas Nigeria Limited’s Head of Strategy, Abiodun Oseni, described LNG as the company’s next major step in delivering cleaner, reliable and affordable energy solutions across the country.

He said the U.S. government’s support would accelerate the project’s implementation and contribute significantly to expanding energy access for industries and communities.

The feasibility study will evaluate the project’s technical and financial viability while also identifying potential U.S. suppliers for equipment, engineering services and other specialised technologies required for the LNG facility.

The initiative is expected to support Nigeria’s drive to increase domestic gas utilisation, improve energy reliability and promote cleaner fuel alternatives for industrial and commercial users.
