Umahi Denies Rumours Linking Him to Death of Nurse Mary Habila
Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, has dismissed rumours linking him to the death of 26-year-old nurse Mary Habila, describing the allegations as “cruel and malicious.”
Umahi spoke during a press briefing at his country home in Ebonyi State, where he addressed the circumstances surrounding the sudden death of the nurse on June 27, 2026.
The minister said Habila had worked closely with his family for about three years and was treated as a member of the family.
He clarified that Mary was a nurse, not a physiotherapist as previously reported, and said she had been battling an underlying health condition.
According to him, he personally supported her medical treatment, including treatment at a hospital in Turkey.
Umahi urged members of the public and critics not to politicise the tragedy, warning against spreading what he described as unfounded allegations concerning the circumstances of the nurse’s death.
Boyfriend’s Call Before Her Death
The minister also disclosed details of a phone conversation between Mary and her boyfriend on the night of June 26, which he said could provide insight into her final moments.
According to Umahi, Mary reportedly called her boyfriend and complained of a nosebleed.
He said her boyfriend advised her to seek medical attention, but she allegedly declined, saying she would be fine and would call him back after taking a bath.
However, when she failed to return the call and did not appear the following morning, concern grew among those around her.
Umahi said her door was eventually forced open, where she was found lifeless inside the room, with the bathroom tap reportedly still running.
The minister reiterated that any attempt to link him or his family to the nurse’s death was malicious, stressing that Habila was treated like a daughter during the years she worked closely with his family.
The circumstances surrounding her death remain the subject of public attention and ongoing police inquiries.
