A senior United States lawmaker, Ted Cruz, has claimed that the U.S. government is monitoring several unnamed Nigerian officials over alleged links to terrorism.

Cruz made the assertion in a post on his X (formerly Twitter) account on Tuesday, reacting to the recent Palm Sunday killings in Angwan Rukuba, Gari Ya Waye area of Jos, Plateau State.

In the statement, the senator accused some Nigerian government officials of creating conditions that enable terrorist activities in the country. He alleged that certain policies have contributed to an environment where violence persists.

“Another slaughter of Christians in Nigeria by jihadists, this time on Palm Sunday. Nigerian government officials have created an environment in which Christians are routinely persecuted and slaughtered… Those officials should know that the US knows who they are and has the tools to hold them accountable,” he wrote.

Cruz specifically referenced the implementation of Sharia law in parts of northern Nigeria, claiming it has allowed extremist groups to operate with limited restraint.

The remarks come amid heightened concerns over insecurity in parts of Nigeria, particularly following recent attacks in Plateau State that have drawn both local and international attention.

As of the time of this report, the Nigerian government has not issued an official response to the senator’s claims.
