Atiku Faults Election Timing, Urges INEC to Shift 2027 Polls from Ramadan

By Matthew Eloyi

Former Vice President of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission to urgently review the Feb. 20, 2027 date scheduled for Nigeria’s next general elections, warning that it clashes with a major religious observance and could undermine voter participation.

In a Facebook post, Atiku argued that the election date falls squarely within the Ramadan fasting period, a sacred season of reflection and devotion for millions of Muslims across Nigeria. He said conducting such a demanding national exercise during the period shows a lack of sensitivity to the country’s socio-religious realities.

According to the former vice president, elections require maximum citizen participation, physical stamina and collective focus — conditions he believes could be affected by the timing. He described the scheduling as poor judgment and said inclusive planning should be a fundamental consideration in a diverse nation.

“At a minimum, choosing a broadly acceptable date should not be mishandled,” Atiku wrote, adding that the issue raises broader questions about the commission’s preparedness for the 2027 polls.

He warned that if the electoral body struggles with what he termed a basic issue of timing, Nigerians may question its ability to organize free, fair and credible elections. Atiku urged the commission to reconsider the date in the interest of inclusivity and public confidence in the electoral process.

The electoral commission has yet to respond publicly to the concerns raised.
