The Bauchi Citizens Action for Change (BCAC) has expressed serious concern over allegations linking the Bauchi State Government to the funding of banditry, warning that such claims have caused significant damage to the state’s image and collective dignity.

The group made its position known on Saturday during a press conference held at the CFA Hotel in Bauchi. A statement jointly read by the BCAC Chairman, Mohammad Ladan Adamu, and Secretary, John Akevi, said comments recently attributed to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had cast Bauchi in a negative light both nationally and internationally.
According to BCAC, narratives suggesting that the state is governed by individuals involved in financing banditry are misleading, unfair, and deeply injurious to the reputation of millions of law-abiding residents. The group described such generalisations as offensive, stressing that they undermine Bauchi’s long-standing identity as a centre of learning, reform, and moral leadership.
The group recalled Bauchi’s historic contributions to Nigeria, noting that the state produced renowned scholars and national figures such as Malam Sa’adu Zungur and Nigeria’s first Prime Minister, Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, and played a prominent role in the country’s independence struggle and early democratic development.
BCAC said it was troubling that the allegations had fueled suspicion and ridicule toward Bauchi citizens, emphasizing that banditry is neither a defining feature of the state nor of its governance.
While warning against politicising the matter, the group also rejected efforts to dismiss the allegations as a mere political witch-hunt. It insisted that claims bordering on terrorism financing must be treated with seriousness, transparency, and accountability.
The group called for clear explanations regarding alleged financial transactions involving Bello Badejo, demanding clarification on their purpose, currency, and whether any contracts were executed. BCAC also commended the former Secretary to the State Government, Barrister Ibrahim Mohammed Kashim, for cooperating with investigators.
BCAC urged the Bauchi State Government to allow the EFCC and the courts to carry out their duties without interference, stressing that adherence to transparency, due process, and the rule of law is essential to restoring and protecting the good name of Bauchi State.
