CBN Governor Highlights Resilience of Nigeria’s Banking Sector Amid Recapitalisation, Policy Reforms

The Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mr. Olayemi Cardoso, has reaffirmed the strength and resilience of Nigeria’s banking sector, noting that 16 banks have met the new recapitalisation requirements, while 27 others are actively raising capital to comply with the new guidelines.

Speaking on the progress of the financial system, Governor Cardoso highlighted the positive outcomes of stronger fiscal–monetary collaboration, which have contributed to improved sovereign ratings, Nigeria’s exit from the FATF grey list, and growing investor confidence. The Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) also emphasized its commitment to data-driven decisions aimed at maintaining price stability and supporting sustainable economic growth.

The CBN Governor pointed to steady progress across key areas, including:

Rising foreign reserves supported by exports, oil production, and remittances
A more open and disciplined foreign exchange market, with daily turnover reaching $500 million
Significant reduction in interest rate differentials
Boosted investor sentiment following Nigeria’s FATF grey-list exit
Attraction of global banks and improved remittance flows

Governor Cardoso stressed that stability remains the foundation for long-term investment and growth, while reinforcing the CBN’s commitment to orthodox central banking practices to reduce past market distortions and enhance policy effectiveness.

The developments reflect Nigeria’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its financial system, enhance investor confidence, and support sustainable economic development.
