The Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mr. Olayemi Cardoso, in February 2026 joined the Governor of the Central Bank of Egypt, Dr. Hassan Abdalla, and the International Finance Corporation (IFC) in Cairo to deepen dialogue under Egypt’s 30by30 programme.

The high-level engagement highlighted a central theme for Africa’s development: the continent’s financial future rests on a balanced commitment to macroeconomic stability and environmental sustainability.

Governor Cardoso stressed that resilience begins with credibility, noting that disciplined and transparent reforms in Nigeria are strengthening macroeconomic fundamentals and restoring confidence in the financial system. He said these efforts are laying the foundation for sustainable long-term growth.

However, participants emphasized that stability alone is insufficient. With climate change increasingly influencing economic outcomes — from sovereign risk assessments to food security — stakeholders agreed that climate risk must be treated as financial risk. Integrating climate considerations into regulatory supervision, capital allocation, and long-term financial strategy was identified as critical for emerging markets.

Through enhanced collaboration with the Central Bank of Egypt and partners across the World Bank Group, the CBN reaffirmed its commitment to building a resilient and risk-aware financial architecture. This includes promoting green finance, strengthening cross-border cooperation, and positioning Africa’s financial systems to withstand global shocks while driving sustainable growth.

Also present at the event was the CBN Deputy Governor in charge of Economic Policy, Dr. Muhammad Sani Abdullahi, who participated in a panel discussion on how regulatory frameworks are shaping climate risk management in emerging markets.
