Controversy as RCCG Bars External Ministers from Altars

By Matthew Eloyi

In a surprising move, the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) has released a memo announcing a strict directive from the General Overseer, instructing that no external Preacher, Speaker, or Minister should be allowed on any of the church’s altars or platforms.

The memo, dated 5th January 2024, emphasised that anyone intending to invite a Guest Minister, Speaker, or Preacher to a parish must ensure that the individual is a recognized member of RCCG.

This directive, which takes immediate effect, has raised eyebrows and sparked a wave of criticism from both within and outside the church community.

Critics argue that this decision appears to limit the diversity of voices and perspectives within the RCCG, potentially stifling spiritual growth and understanding. Many members are expressing concerns over the implications of restricting the introduction of fresh ideas and teachings.

The move is seen by some as a departure from the traditional openness of religious institutions to welcoming guest speakers from various denominations and backgrounds. Critics are questioning the motivation behind such a decision and whether it aligns with the principles of religious inclusivity.

One of the critics, Lawrence Bilal Audu wrote on his Facebook page: “Churches build walls thereby dividing the people instead of uniting them. This memo by the RCCG barring outsiders from ministering on their platforms shows how insecure Church leadership across various denominations have become.

“These people don’t care about the souls of their flock, but how much they can milk out of them. If you’re stuck in any of these contraptions, then they are either taking your money or your brains.”

Furthermore, the memo warns of severe disciplinary measures for any Minister(s) who violate the directive, potentially facing the removal of their ministerial duties within the Mission. This has intensified the debate, with some arguing that such strict consequences may create an atmosphere of fear and restrict the freedom of expression for the clergy.

The RCCG, known for its vast network of parishes globally, has not provided detailed reasons for the directive. However, this development has ignited conversations about the role of external influences in religious institutions and the potential impact on the congregation’s spiritual growth and understanding.
