An Abuja High Court has ordered the remand of former Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige, in the Kuje Correctional Centre pending the determination of his bail application. Ngige was arraigned on Friday on an eight-count charge filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), bordering on abuse of office, contract fraud, and corrupt enrichment.

According to the EFCC, the former minister allegedly approved questionable contracts and misappropriated public funds during his tenure. He pleaded not guilty to all charges.
During the proceedings, Ngige’s defence counsel sought bail on medical grounds, but the prosecution opposed the application, arguing that granting bail at this stage could interfere with ongoing investigations.
Presiding Judge, Justice Mariam Hassan, ruled that the former minister be kept in prison custody until the court decides on the bail request. The matter has been adjourned to a later date for continuation of trial.
The case has attracted widespread public interest as the EFCC continues its intensified efforts to prosecute corruption allegations involving former public officials.
