Dangote Cement Plc, Gboko Plant, has announced a significant increase in its bursary payments to students from its host communities, doubling the financial support in a landmark gesture of corporate responsibility.
The disclosure was made by the acting Plant Director, Engr. Murusamy Murugan, during the presentation of the 2024 Dangote scholarship to the Yion Clan Foundation and the Yion Traditional Council at the Gboko plant.
Engr. Murugan revealed that the bursary, previously a long-standing point of concern for the Mbayion community, has been reviewed upwards to ₦22,800, effective 2025.
He emphasized the company’s commitment to fostering development within its host community, stating.
“It is our expectation that this increased bursary will be judiciously used by those who merit it.
“We shall continue to collaborate with the community and stakeholders to implement impactful projects aligned with our Community Development Agreement and Corporate Social Responsibility policy.”
The Mue Ter Gboko, His Royal Highness Ikpa Ahua, expressed gratitude on behalf of the community, commending Dangote Cement for responding to their call for a review.
The monarch reaffirmed the community’s dedication to maintaining a harmonious relationship with the company, noting that many community members are gainfully employed by the plant.
Comrade Orver Yongu, President of the Yion Development Association (YIDA), echoed this sentiment, applauding the company’s commitment to the community and its financial support for recent events such as the Yion Day celebration.
Outgoing Deputy General Manager of the Social Performance Department, Dr. Eugene Ivase, reassured the community of Dangote Cement’s unwavering commitment to their welfare.
“We take your concerns seriously and remain focused on strengthening our relationship with the community. Things will only improve from here,” Dr. Ivase assured.
This upward review further solidifies Dangote Cement’s role as a key player in community development, fostering stronger ties and improved livelihoods in its host communities.
