Dangote Honoured with FUTO Doctorate, Says Nigerian Youths Remain Nation’s Greatest Asset

Africa’s most influential industrialist, Aliko Dangote, was at the weekend conferred with an honourary Doctorate Degree in Management Technology (D.MT Honoris Causa) by the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO), in recognition of his transformative contributions to Nigeria’s industrial sector, youth development, and economic advancement.

Represented by his Special Adviser, Engr. Ahmed Mansur, Dangote received the honour at an elaborate convocation ceremony attended by government officials, academia, industry leaders and diplomatic representatives. The event was presided over by the Vice Chancellor, Professor (Mrs.) Nnenna N. Oti, and witnessed by the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council, Senator Jack Tilley-Gyado, and the representative of the President of Nigeria, Professor Jesse Uneke.
In his acceptance speech, Dangote described Nigerian youths as “the nation’s greatest asset,” stating that their creativity, resilience, and innovative capacity stand as proof that Nigeria’s future remains full of promise.
He noted that FUTO, alongside other specialised institutions, plays a crucial role not just in the production of graduates, but in unlocking ingenuity that can transform the nation.
“At FUTO, knowledge is not only acquired but applied to solve real societal challenges, from unemployment to infrastructure gaps. This blend of learning and problem-solving is precisely what our nation needs at this defining moment,” he said.
He further emphasized that although Nigeria continues to face economic complexities, it also possesses deep and unmatched potential—driven by a young population and a rapidly expanding entrepreneurial ecosystem.
Dangote reaffirmed his commitment to educational advancement and innovation-driven development, announcing readiness for stronger collaboration between Dangote Industries and FUTO.
“The Dangote Group stands ready to partner in ways that bring together education, technology, and enterprise—supporting research, nurturing startups, and enabling innovation that responds directly to Nigeria’s most pressing needs,” he assured.
The business mogul highlighted the role of innovation in diversifying Nigeria’s economy beyond oil, strengthening local manufacturing and sustaining long-term growth.
Addressing the graduating class, Dangote delivered a personal and values-driven charge:
“Talent opens the door, but consistency is what takes you across the finish line. True wealth is measured not in accumulation, but in the number of lives touched and improved.”
He advised the students to carry integrity like an inheritance and build careers on discipline, grit, and ethical ambition.
“As you move forward, dream boldly but start grounded. Be ready to work hard, remain disciplined, and hold fast to your principles. Nigeria’s future will be shaped by those who do not wait for change, but create it,” he said.
Dangote expressed deep appreciation to the University Council, Senate and Management for bestowing the honour, stating that it has further strengthened his commitment to national growth and human capital development.
“This recognition reinforces my resolve to continue investing in our country’s growth, supporting education, and championing initiatives that build a more prosperous and self-reliant Africa.”
