The Presidential Committee on Flood Relief and Rehabilitation (PCFRR), co-chaired by Aliko Dangote and Dr. Olisa Agbakoba, has delivered relief materials worth N1 billion to the Borno State Government.

The handover ceremony, held on Wednesday in Maiduguri, was attended by key officials and stakeholders.

Speaking at the event, the committee’s secretary, Mrs. Hajara Modu, reaffirmed the PCFRR’s dedication to supporting flood-affected communities. Representing the co-chairmen, she emphasised that the delivery fulfils the committee’s pledge during the 2024 flood crisis.

“This intervention is part of the N2 billion donation announced by Alhaji Aliko Dangote, with N1 billion allocated by the committee for relief materials and another N1 billion donated through the Aliko Dangote Foundation (ADF),” Modu explained.

Borno State, which faced one of its worst flood disasters in September 2024, bore the brunt of the nationwide flooding, with over 70% of Maiduguri submerged, thousands displaced, and vital services disrupted.

Governor Babagana Umara Zulum, represented by his deputy, Mr. Umar Usman Kadafur, expressed profound gratitude to the Dangote-led PCFRR. He highlighted the committee’s consistent contributions to the state’s recovery efforts, noting that the state government has established a dedicated committee to ensure transparent distribution of the relief materials.

“Alhaji Aliko Dangote’s unwavering commitment to humanitarian causes has been a beacon of hope for Borno State, especially during challenging times like this,” Governor Zulum said.

Similarly, the Director-General of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Mrs. Zubaida Umar, commended Mr. Dangote for his leadership in addressing humanitarian challenges. Represented by NEMA’s Director of Relief and Rehabilitation, Abdullahi Adamu Usur, she described the PCFRR’s intervention as a testament to the Federal Government’s commitment to alleviating the plight of flood victims under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.

The relief materials include essential food and non-food items such as beans, sugar, seasoning, tomato paste, vegetable oil, mattresses, mosquito nets, blankets, sanitary pads, and children’s nappies.

The comprehensive package is aimed at addressing both immediate and long-term needs of flood survivors.

Mr. Sirajo Garba, NEMA’s Coordinator for the Northeast Zonal Office, assured stakeholders of a transparent distribution process in collaboration with the state government and other partners.

Borno State Commissioner for Women and Social Development, Zuwaira Gambo, lauded the intervention as a lifeline for affected families.

She praised the Dangote-led committee for its consistent humanitarian efforts, which she described as a “game-changer” in the state’s recovery journey.

This significant intervention underscores the critical role of private-public partnerships in mitigating the impact of natural disasters and rebuilding lives in affected communities.
