DGCA Calls for Constructive Engagement to Strengthen Industrial Relations in Aviation Sector

The Director-General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), Capt. Chris Najomo, has urged aviation stakeholders to foster effective industrial relations, mutual understanding, and constructive engagement between management and staff to resolve workplace concerns.

Capt. Najomo made this call during a five-day joint training programme on Industrial Relations and Negotiation Skills for Air Traffic Controllers (ATC), organised by the International Federation of Air Traffic Controllers’ Associations (IFATCA) and the International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF)global trade union federation”], held in Lagos from 23rd to 27th March, 2026.

Highlighting the evolving nature of the aviation sector, Capt. Najomo noted that increasing operational demands, rapid technological advancements, and complex workforce dynamics make constructive dialogue between management and staff more critical than ever. He stressed that stability, professionalism, and trust are fundamental to aviation, warning that disruptions—even those well-intentioned—can affect safety, operations, economic stability, and public confidence.

“Dialogue must come first, and industrial action should always be a last resort,” he said, reaffirming the Authority’s commitment to promoting a just culture, strengthening institutional frameworks, and ensuring a safe and fair working environment for all aviation professionals.

Also speaking, the NCAA Director of Aerodrome and Airspace Standards (DAAS) and Executive Vice President of IFATCA for the Africa & Middle East Region, Alh. , lauded the international partners and participants for supporting the programme. He emphasized that effective industrial relations in aviation must be built on mutual respect, structured engagement, and a shared commitment to safety and service delivery.

The programme provided participants with practical tools for negotiation, dispute resolution, and maintaining harmonious industrial relations, underscoring the role of collaboration in sustaining safety and efficiency in Nigeria’s airspace.
