Don Pushes Curricula Review to Integrate Industrial Revolution Skills in Universities

By Auwal Ilyasu, Gombe

A university scholar has called for an urgent review of academic curricula across Nigerian tertiary institutions to integrate skills relevant to the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR).

Speaking at the International Conference on Business, Finance and Entrepreneurship (IBUFINE 2025), hosted by North-Eastern University (NEU) Gombe, Prof. Babangida Mohammed Musa of Gombe State University (GSU) said universities must overhaul outdated teaching models to align with emerging global demands. He identified digital literacy, critical thinking and complex problem-solving as core competencies required in modern workplaces.

Prof. Musa argued that without a systematic shift toward technology-driven training, graduates risk being unprepared for industry expectations shaped by automation, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and advanced digital systems.

The conference, organised by NEU’s Department of Business Administration in collaboration with the Certified Institute of Entrepreneurship and Enterprise Education (CIEEE), explored “Management, Innovation and Entrepreneurship for Sustainable Development.”

Earlier, the Registrar of CIEEE, Prof. Nuruddeen Oyekola, urged institutions to reinforce practical skill development alongside classroom instruction. He referenced models in countries where vocational exposure begins early and highlighted the need for Nigeria to adopt similar approaches. He also introduced a new publication described as an Entrepreneurship Dictionary.

NEU’s Pro-Chancellor, Dr. Sani Adamu Jauro, said the conference provided a platform for students and academics to assess trends shaping business and innovation. He noted that the university is engaging partners to support teaching improvements and expand training opportunities.

Meanwhile, students who participated said the deliberations improved their understanding of entrepreneurship. Yasir Muhammad Alkali said he gained insights on sustaining business growth, while Zainab Abubakar Salihu pointed to discussions on strengthening women’s participation in enterprise.

During the event, CIEEE presented NEU with several recognitions, including an Entrepreneurship Merit Award and certification as a Certified Entrepreneurial University.
