In a statement issued on Wednesday, the anti-graft agency disclosed that the suspect was apprehended by operatives of its Ilorin Zonal Directorate following a petition.

According to the commission, Adamu allegedly obtained the funds from a complainant, Alhaji Tanko Yawale, under the pretext of facilitating the purchase of a property in Abuja.

“The Ilorin Zonal Directorate of the EFCC has arrested an Abuja-based house agent, Hajia Adama Ahmed Adamu, over an alleged property fraud to the tune of ₦288 million,” the statement read.

The agency further explained that the suspect allegedly collected the money for a property located at House 31, Haile Selassie Street, Asokoro, Abuja, but failed to provide valid documentation after receiving the payment.

“Following the payment, Hajia Adamu allegedly failed to provide the complainant with valid documents for the property and subsequently became evasive, prompting a formal petition to the EFCC,” the commission added.

The development highlights the growing concerns over property-related fraud in Nigeria’s real estate sector, particularly in major cities like Abuja, where unsuspecting buyers are often targeted by fraudulent intermediaries.

The EFCC said it has intensified its crackdown on land and housing scams in recent months and urged members of the public to carry out proper verification of property ownership and documentation before making payments.

Investigations into the matter are ongoing.
