Ms. Sayner said she was left stunned when Mr. Perrett, a wealthy but modest pharmacist with no close family, informed her of his decision shortly before his death in September at the age of 86. According to her, the longtime landlord cited her reliability, care for the property and consistent rent payments over the years as reasons for the extraordinary gift.
The St Albans property, valued at approximately $700,000, now provides Ms. Sayner with long-term security in her retirement. “It’s changed my entire life,” she said. “I no longer have to worry about paying rent.”
Beyond the gift of the home, Mr. Perrett’s legacy extended far into the community. In an act of philanthropy, he donated an estimated $18.6 million to the Royal Melbourne Hospital in appreciation for a kidney transplant that prolonged his life by nearly three decades.
