In a significant step toward integrating human security and gender perspectives into military operations, the Defence Headquarters, in collaboration with the British Defence Staff, has commenced an 8-day Human Security and Gender Adviser Course in Abuja.

The initiative, which underscores the Nigerian Armed Forces’ commitment to fostering stability and inclusivity, was officially declared open by Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Gwabin Musa who was representing by Rear Admiral Olusanya Bankole

Delivering the CDS’s remarks, Rear Admiral Bankole emphasized the Armed Forces of Nigeria’s (AFN) critical role in protecting civilians, strengthening civil-military relations, and building public trust.

He noted that modern security challenges demand a shift from conventional military strategies toward a broader human security framework that places the well-being of individuals and communities at the center of national security efforts.

“Human security and gender considerations are no longer secondary issues in military operations. They are essential components of strategic planning, operational effectiveness, and sustainable peace,” the representative stated.

Acknowledging the steadfast support of the British High Commission and British Defence Staff, the CDS’s representative expressed deep appreciation for their commitment to the professional development of Nigerian military personnel.

The course aims to equip participants with the knowledge and skills to incorporate gender-sensitive and human-centric approaches into military operations.

This aligns with General Musa’s leadership philosophy, which prioritizes people-centered security, non-discrimination, and community engagement as vital tools for achieving long-term peace and development.

“Winning the peace requires more than military superiority; it demands understanding the socio-political and economic dimensions of security. By integrating gender perspectives and human security principles, we can enhance trust, inclusivity, and conflict resolution efforts,” the representative added.

The training will focus on non-kinetic operational strategies, emphasizing conflict resolution, gender sensitivity, and sustainable peace-building approaches.

Participants are encouraged to actively engage in discussions and apply the insights gained to their respective units and deployments.

Reiterating the CDS’s vision, the representative highlighted that continuous capacity-building in civil-military relations remains a key priority for the AFN.
