Sugary sodas, alcohol, and excessive caffeine consumption may gradually weaken bone health over time, according to findings from researchers at Harvard Medical School and the National Institutes of Health.

Studies indicate that high soda intake is associated with lower bone mineral density, particularly among women. Researchers explain that phosphoric acid found in many cola beverages may disrupt the body’s calcium balance, potentially affecting bone strength. Additionally, very high caffeine intake has been shown to slightly reduce calcium absorption, while excessive alcohol consumption can interfere with vitamin D activation in the liver — a critical process for proper calcium use in the body.

Further research published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition reports that chronic heavy drinking increases fracture risk and weakens bone structure over time.

Health experts from the International Osteoporosis Foundation emphasize that long-term lifestyle habits play a significant role in maintaining strong bones. They recommend balanced nutrition, sufficient calcium and vitamin D intake, and regular weight-bearing exercise as key strategies to protect against gradual bone loss.

While occasional consumption may not pose immediate harm, specialists warn that sustained unhealthy habits can quietly undermine bone strength in the long run.
