Federal Approval Paves Way for Kogi’s First International Airport

By Matthew Eloyi

The Kogi State Government has received Federal Government approval to construct an international airport at Zariagi, near Lokoja, a move expected to transform the state’s economy and ease regional air travel.

According to Kogi’s Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Fanwo, the Federal Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development granted the approval, which was formally conveyed to the state government in a letter dated October 9.

Fanwo noted that Governor Alhaji Usman Ododo’s administration is prioritising the project, aiming for a timely completion that aligns with strict regulatory standards.

“Having an airport in Kogi will definitely serve 10 other states and reduce traffic on the Lokoja-Abuja road. It will also decongest the Abuja International Airport,” he explained.

The commissioner highlighted the strategic location of Kogi State as a key advantage, describing the project as a step towards making Kogi an aviation hub.

“The project will not only boost the economy of the state, but it will also create jobs and bring the state’s potential to a global audience,” Fanwo added.

Governor Ododo has pledged to engage top industry professionals to ensure the airport meets international standards.

Fanwo emphasised that “aviation is an industry of trust and standards,” underscoring the administration’s commitment to quality.

Fanwo expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu and the Minister of Aviation for their support, calling the airport approval “historic” for Kogi’s development.

He added that the airport will include facilities for cargo, aligning with the government’s vision for expanded commerce.

The commissioner assured residents that the Ododo administration would continue pursuing significant projects, building on the achievements of former Governor Yahaya Bello’s administration.
