Flagging off the exercise, the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Benard Mohammed Doro, said the intervention, implemented under the Presidential Initiative for Food and Nutrition Assistance, represents a decisive, people-centred response to support vulnerable households, stabilise affected communities, and strengthen food security across the state.

He explained that the initiative aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which places food security, poverty reduction, and social protection at the core of governance. Dr. Doro noted that Niger State’s strategic importance to national development and food production makes it imperative to directly address the humanitarian pressures confronting the state.

The Minister further disclosed plans by the Ministry to partner with the Niger State Government to ensure beneficiaries and affected populations are captured in the ongoing National Social Register expansion, enabling them to access a range of federal social protection and poverty reduction programmes.

In his remarks, Niger State Governor, Umaru Bago, described the intervention as timely and significant, thanking President Tinubu for sustained support to the state during challenging periods. He noted that the vast landmass of Niger State poses security challenges that require support from the Federal Government, international partners, and donor agencies.

Governor Bago also highlighted the impact of water overflow from hydroelectric dams in the state on downstream communities, as well as the spillover of insecurity from the North-West, which has displaced many families and intensified humanitarian needs. He called for collaboration to ensure displaced children are enrolled in schools as part of efforts to counter extremist ideologies.

Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Olubunmi Olusanya, said the intervention is part of ongoing federal support to the ten most conflict-affected states, targeting vulnerable households to combat food insecurity, malnutrition, and climate-related challenges.

Also speaking, Niger State Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management, Ahmed Ibrahim Inga, commended the state government for its interventions and noted that the ministry is intensifying sensitisation efforts to reduce humanitarian crises.

The highlight of the event was the distribution of food items, including 25kg bags of rice and millet, beans, vegetable and palm oil, and seasonings to beneficiaries.
