Former Minister of Finance, Kemi Adeosun, has revealed that the Federal Government identified about 45,000 ghost workers by integrating the Bank Verification Number (BVN) into its payroll system.
She made the disclosure during a policy dialogue at the Citadel School of Government in Lagos, where she spoke on the role of technology in enhancing public sector efficiency and accountability.
According to Adeosun, the adoption of BVN technology enabled authorities to verify the identities of workers on the federal payroll, exposing thousands of fraudulent entries and significantly reducing leakages in government spending.
She noted that the reform formed part of broader efforts to strengthen transparency, improve financial management, and ensure that public funds are utilised more effectively.
Adeosun served as Nigeria’s finance minister under former President Muhammadu Buhari from November 2015 until her resignation in September 2018.
Her remarks highlight the growing importance of digital systems in governance, particularly in tackling corruption and improving efficiency in public institutions.
