Former Deputy Governor of Kano State and 2023 APC gubernatorial candidate, Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna, has officially resigned from his position as Chairman of the Nigeria Housing Finance Bank (NHPB).

In a statement released on Monday, Gawuna said his resignation will take effect from Tuesday, March 31, 2026.
“I am resigning to comply with the directive of the President, which requires anyone holding a political office who intends to contest elections to step down, in accordance with electoral law,” Gawuna stated.
In a letter to the Secretary to the Federal Government, Gawuna expressed his gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for appointing him as Chairman of the NHPB.
Last week, speculation intensified that Gawuna, widely regarded as a close ally of former APC national chairman Abdullahi Ganduje, might leave the APC following his unsuccessful bid for Kano State Governor in 2023.
The political contest in Kano has been contentious. In September 2023, the Kano State Governorship Election Tribunal initially declared Gawuna the winner. However, in January 2024, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of Abba Kabir Yusuf, confirming him as the duly elected governor.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had originally announced in March 2023 that Abba Kabir Yusuf won the election with 1,019,602 votes, while Nasiru Gawuna came second with 890,705 votes.
