According to the Uganda Police Force, the attack occurred on Thursday at Ggaba Early Childhood Development Programme school in the Makindye Division of the city.
Police spokesperson Rachael Kawala said the victims included one girl and three boys. The suspect, a 34-year-old man, reportedly gained access to the school premises before launching the attack on the children.
Local reports indicated that the attacker disguised himself as a parent to gain entry. He initially interacted with school administrators before moving outside, where he allegedly locked the gate and began attacking the children.
The assault was eventually stopped by a security guard from a nearby church, after which the suspect was apprehended by authorities.
“The suspect has been apprehended, and investigations are ongoing to determine the motive behind the killings,” police said in a statement.
Footage aired by NTV Uganda showed distraught parents at the scene, with many seen weeping as news of the incident spread. Security operatives were also forced to fire warning shots into the air to disperse an angry crowd that had gathered, with some attempting to attack the suspect.
The incident has sent shockwaves through Kampala, a city of about three million residents, where such violent attacks are considered rare.
Authorities have assured the public that a full investigation is underway as the nation mourns the loss of the young victims.
