Nigerian disc jockey Deejay Kulet, widely known for her electrifying hip-hop and Fuji mixtapes, has shared new insights into her early life growing up in Lagos — a story marked by modest beginnings, community fame, and an unapologetically bold personality.
Speaking during an interview on the “TALK TO B” show, Kulet — born Kudi Gbemisola Salami — reflected on her childhood in Lawanson, Surulere, where her family’s name carried weight in the neighbourhood. Her grandmother and mother were food vendors in the bustling area, while her father earned a living as a commercial bus driver, making the family well-known among residents.

According to the DJ, her own spirited nature ensured she stood out even more.
“I was a tough child, everybody knew me,” she said. “My grandmother was selling food and my mother sells food too. My dad was a bus driver. Our family was popular and I was very stubborn.”
Kulet added that her name became synonymous with energy, mischief, and recognition in the community.
“Anytime you hear Kudi, even if it is not my own Kudi, the first thing that comes to your mind is my own Kudi,” she joked. “So I have been a glorious child from the beginning, although my glory is more of trouble.”
Today, Deejay Kulet is celebrated for her dynamic sets and unique blend of sounds — a far cry from the streets where she first made her mark. Yet, her story continues to resonate with fans who admire her authenticity, resilience, and unapologetic personality.
