First Lady of The Gambia, Mrs. Fatoumata Bah-Barrow, has commended Lieutenant General Tukur Yusufu Buratai, Nigeria’s former Chief of Army Staff and ex-Ambassador to Benin Republic, for his innovative approach to food production and self-sufficiency.

During her visit to Tukur and Tukur Farms on Sunday, she praised Buratai’s efforts in livestock, dairy, and agriculture, calling his work a model for Africa.

“What I witnessed today embodies determination and commitment,” said Mrs. Bah-Barrow.

“Initially, I perceived the General as solely focused on military affairs, but today, I see a General of all mankind,” the First Lady added.

She highlighted Buratai’s integrated farming model as a blueprint for sustainable development, noting his impact on community empowerment.

Looking forward, the First Lady expressed hope that such initiatives would expand across Africa to combat hunger and foster unity.

She suggested The Gambia as a pilot location, given its size and population, and invited Buratai to share his expertise through a lecture, especially for military camps.

Ambassador Buratai, who also holds the titles Betara of Biu and Garkuwan Keffi, shared that his journey into agriculture began during his days as a Major.

His legacy includes founding the Nigerian Army Farms and Ranches, a significant contributor to Nigeria’s GDP, demonstrating how retired officers can meaningfully impact society.

The visit culminated in a tour of Tukur and Tukur Farms’ facilities, where Mrs. Bah-Barrow viewed diverse operations, including poultry, greenhouse farming, and production lines for baked goods, bottled water, and Arwasky yogurt.

Accompanying her were Deputy Head of Mission Abdoulie Hydara, Deputy Permanent Secretary Anna Jobe, and First Secretary Babucarr Dubumya from the Gambian High Commission.
