Ghana Police Arrest Nearly 50 Nigerians in Major Crackdown on Online Fraud Near Accra

Ghanaian police have arrested nearly 50 Nigerian nationals during a series of nighttime raids targeting suspected online fraud operations on the outskirts of Accra. The arrests form part of an intensified effort by authorities to combat the growing menace of cybercrime, commonly referred to as “Yahoo Yahoo.”

According to Ghana’s Information Minister, Sam George, the coordinated operation led to the arrest of 48 suspected cybercrime operatives, including two women. The suspects are believed to be involved in a range of illicit online activities, including romance scams, fake investment schemes, impersonation fraud and illegal online gold trading.

The raids were carried out in residential areas around the capital following intelligence reports linking the suspects to organized cybercrime networks. Authorities say investigations are ongoing, and the suspects will be processed in line with Ghanaian law.

Online fraud has become an increasing concern in Ghana, particularly as economic pressures and limited job opportunities push some youths toward cybercrime. The situation mirrors broader regional challenges, as Nigeria—despite its rapidly growing fintech and technology sector—has also struggled with the global reputation and impact of internet-related scams.

Earlier this year, Nigerian authorities arrested nearly 800 people in Lagos during a large-scale cybercrime operation, including about 150 Chinese nationals, highlighting the transnational nature of online fraud networks.

In Ghana, concerns have also been raised about the exploitation of digital platforms for illegal gold trading. Recent government restrictions on gold transactions, including limits on foreign participation, were introduced to curb informal mining and related online scams.

Ghanaian authorities say the latest arrests underscore their commitment to tackling cybercrime and protecting both local citizens and international victims from online fraud, while calling for stronger regional cooperation to address the cross-border nature of the crime.
