Gov Zulum Introduces Unified Counterterrorism Curriculum for Islamic Schools

Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum, has taken a significant step in countering violent extremist ideologies by unveiling a unified curriculum for Islamic schools. The initiative aims to prevent the radicalization of young people by terrorist groups.

Governor Zulum expressed concern about the absence of a unified curriculum in Islamic schools for the past three to four decades, “there is the need to address this gap to prevent a recurrence of incidents like the Boko Haram insurgency, which originated from misleading preaching,” he said.

During the unveiling at the Government House’s council chamber, Zulum assured that his administration would enforce strict adherence to the new unified curriculum in all Islamic schools. He underscored the importance of teaching and preaching in accordance with the authentic content of holy books.

Governor Zulum stated, “We are currently witnessing another development recently; we are concerned by the way some scholars preach. Therefore, the Government of Borno State will do everything possible to ensure that teaching and preaching comply with the proper content of the holy books.”

The curriculum, prepared based on the policies of the National Board for Arabic and Islamic Studies, qualifies students from private Islamic schools for admission to Universities and Colleges.

Chairman of the Arabic and Tsangaya Education Board, Khalifah Sheikh Ali Abulfathi, explained that the curriculum, centered on the Maliki School of thought, focuses on the teaching of Arabic, Quran, Hadith, Tauhid, and fiqh. He urged parents and stakeholders to support the new curriculum, ensuring every child has access to quality Islamic education.
