Harmattan: Osun Govt warns residents against bush burning

As Christmas and the New Year celebration draws closer coupled with the harmattan season, the Osun State government has warned residents against bush burning.
The warning was given through the Special Adviser to Governor Ademola Adeleke of the state on Environment and Sanitation, Hon Babatunde Adeniyi Balogun in a press statement issued and made available to our Correspondent in Osogbo on Thursday.
According to Hon Balogun, it is very important for every household to collaborate with the incumbent administration in Osun to avert any outbreak of fire during the festive period.
The Special Adviser said the harmattan season has stepped in and there was the need to take adequate measures to ensure that all the negative things associated with it were nipped in the bud.
Hon Balogun also warned residents to continue to keep their environment clean in order to prevent diseases before, during and after the coming Christmas and New Year celebrations which are approaching.
Hon Balogun reminded all that as it is customary, a lot of waste would be generated during Christmas and New Year celebrations while calling for proper disposal of all such wastes as well as proper sorting and bagging and placing them at designated points.
The Osun Special Adviser on Environment and Sanitation informed that the Osun Waste Management Agency, OWMA, will respond adequately in terms of carting away all wastes and refuse that may be generated during the period.
Hon Balogun further reiterated the efforts of Governor Ademola Adeleke’s led administration in the state saying the government is at the forefront of the campaign for a healthy people and a cleaner environment, and will always encourage the entire people of the state to desist from acts that could have negative impacts on the environment.
He also admonished residents against the storage of petrol and other inflammable items at homes, offices, shops and markets as their storage could aid fire outbreaks particularly when virtually all objects in the environment are dry and combustible during this period.
The politician also urged drivers and Okada riders to beware of the hazy and harmattan weather conditions which may reduce visibility to less than 10m urging them to always take precautions while on the road.
