Harvest: Farmers in Gombe advised against selling off produce
Engr Sale Mohammed has advised farmers in Gombe State to reserve some of their produce for eating and not to sell all to middlemen or other off-takers who are mopping produce from communities.
Mohammed gave the advice while speaking during the 2023 Kaltungo Carnival held in Kaltungo, Kaltungo LGA, Gombe State, on Wednesday.
He said that the advice became imperative in view of the need to ensure that farmers were not plunge into further hardship than they may be facing.
“We are majorly farmers and since we just harvested our crops, I like to advice us not to sell our produce anyhow.
“Farmers must avoid selling all their produce only to buy them back at exorbitant prices because that may lead to more hardship for them,” he said.
He commended guests at the event and urged the people of Gombe State to continue to promote peaceful co-existence so that the state would witness more development.
Speaking earlier, the Emir of Zazzau, Kaduna State, Ahmed Bamalli, who is also the royal father of the day urged stakeholders to harness culture to promote peace and unity in the state and the country.
Bamalli said any event like the Kaltungo cultural carnival that brought people together to showcase their cultures on the same platform had a way of unifying the people and promoting peaceful co-existence.
He commended the Mai Kaltungo, Engr Sale Mohammed, for initiating and consistently promoting the carnival annually.
On his part, Gov. Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe State says sustaining cultural values remains a vital tool for promoting peace, unity and social harmony in the society.
Represented by his deputy, Mr Manassah Jatau, Yahaya said any event that promoted the cultural heritage of different ethnic groups was a platform to harmonise the different beliefs and enhance cultural understanding.
He attributed some of the security challenges and other undesirable vices in the society to the abandonment of cultural values, beliefs and practices.
He said the event was important because cultural festival served as a great platform to mobilise stakeholders in the arts and culture industry to interact, showcase their talents and protect societal values.
According to him, the event also provides a platform to develop the spirit of understanding, appreciation of one another’s culture and ensure peaceful co-existence.
“This government places higher premium on the positive role that culture plays in the progress of any society.
“It is in this regard that the government has reached advanced stage in the establishment of a museum under the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, where cultural artefacts would be preserved for obvious reasons.
“Furthermore, government has continued to promote our cultural heritage through supporting all ethnic groups that mark their cultural days,” he said.
He added that his government would set aside a day to mark Gombe Day of Culture, where all the ethnic groups in the state would showcase their cultures.
The highlights of the event included cultural displays by different cultural troupes from Adamawa, Yobe and Borno States.
