At Beirut International Airport, Officer NASA and his German shepherd, Jim, made an unexpected discovery that would capture worldwide attention. During a routine patrol, Jim became unusually fixated on a plain suitcase arriving from Ukraine. Unlike his usual calm demeanor, the dog whined and crouched near the luggage, prompting Officer NASA to call in the bomb squad for precautionary checks.

Though no explosives were found, closer inspection revealed small holes and a strange odor emanating from the suitcase. To everyone’s surprise, three Siberian tiger cubs—dehydrated, dirty, and scared—were discovered inside. The cubs, later named Maya, Tanya, and Anton, had been transported from a Ukrainian zoo to Damascus under terrible conditions.

Airport staff immediately provided the cubs with water and blankets before animal control took them to a safe facility for care and recovery. Their rescue highlighted not only the heroic instincts of Jim but also the pervasive issue of illegal animal trafficking, which endangers wildlife and spreads disease.
