The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has dismissed as false and malicious a viral claim alleging that its Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, endorsed a partisan post on social media platform X.
In a statement issued from Abuja, the Commission described the allegation as a fabrication aimed at undermining the integrity and neutrality of its leadership at a critical time in the nation’s electoral process.
INEC clarified that the Chairman does not operate any personal account on X (formerly Twitter) and has never engaged in partisan commentary or political activity in either his official or private capacity.
The Commission said the purported post was part of a coordinated campaign of misinformation designed to erode public trust, especially as preparations intensify for upcoming elections and electoral reforms.
It further raised concerns over the activities of cybercriminals who have allegedly created fake social media accounts in the Chairman’s name to defraud unsuspecting Nigerians. According to INEC, several such fraudulent accounts had previously been identified and reported to security agencies.
INEC disclosed that it is currently working with relevant security and cyber-intelligence agencies to track down those responsible for the impersonation and dissemination of false information.
The Commission warned that identity theft and the spread of forged or manipulated online content constitute offences under Nigeria’s Cybercrimes Act and assured that those behind the act would face prosecution.
INEC urged members of the public to disregard the claims and rely only on official communication channels for accurate information.
Reaffirming its commitment, the Commission stated that it remains focused on delivering free, fair, and credible elections across Nigeria.
