Officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) have been confirmed present at the ongoing national convention of the Peoples Democratic Party taking place at the Moshood Abiola Stadium in Abuja.

The disclosure was made by Lere Olayinka, spokesperson to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, who noted that top officials of the electoral body were on ground to monitor proceedings.
According to Olayinka, INEC is represented by National Commissioners, Prof. Sani Adams (SAN) and Dr. Ken Ukeagu, alongside senior officials including directors from the Commission’s Election and Party Monitoring, Legal, and Drafting departments.
The convention, organised by the Abdulrahman Mohammed-led caretaker committee, commenced on Sunday with delegates arriving at the velodrome of the stadium. Party members, dressed in branded attire, were seen undergoing accreditation and security screening at designated points.
Key figures in attendance include Wike, the caretaker committee chairman, and the Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Mao Ohuabunwa. The venue was adorned in party colours and symbols, reflecting the significance of the gathering.
Scheduled to run from Sunday to Monday, the convention is expected to produce members of the National Working Committee (NWC), who will steer the party’s affairs ahead of the 2027 general elections. The PDP constitution provides for a 19-member NWC, including positions such as National Chairman, Secretary, Treasurer, Organising Secretary, and Publicity Secretary, among others.
The event is being held amid internal divisions within the party, as well as ongoing legal disputes stemming from a previous convention conducted by a faction of governors in Ibadan in November 2025.
Despite the tensions, the caretaker committee insists that no court order has been issued to halt the convention. Its spokesperson, Jungudo Mohammed, maintained that all legal and procedural requirements had been fulfilled, assuring members of a credible, transparent, and inclusive process.
Wike, who is seen as a key figure in the current party dynamics, reiterated that reconciliation efforts would continue after the convention, stressing that disagreements are not unusual in a large political organisation.
The development underscores a critical moment for the PDP as it seeks to stabilise its internal structure and reposition itself as a formidable opposition force ahead of the next general elections.
