The transfer was effected through the National Sports Commission, led by Shehu Dikko, and approved by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, in the national interest, subject to agreed safeguards.

Governor Sani described the development as a milestone with enduring institutional significance, underscoring Kaduna State’s commitment to repositioning sports as a catalyst for economic growth and social renewal. He noted that since its commissioning in 1964, the stadium had not undergone the level of structural modernisation required to maintain its status as a premier sporting facility.

According to the Governor, comprehensive reconstruction is currently underway to expand the stadium’s capacity from 16,000 to 32,000 seats. When completed, the revamped facility will rank as the second-largest stadium in Nigeria after the , and among the finest sporting arenas in the country.

He explained that the objective of the project is to stimulate economic activity, boost sports tourism, create employment, and attract investment, while maintaining the stadium as a shared national asset accessible to Nigeria’s national teams, federal sporting programmes, and events of national importance.

Governor Sani added that the National Sports Commission has commended Kaduna State for aligning with President Tinubu’s broader agenda of positioning sports as a viable economic driver, noting that Kaduna’s approach has set a model now being adopted by other states.

He expressed appreciation to the Federal Government, President Tinubu, the National Sports Commission, and all stakeholders involved, expressing confidence that the renewed Ahmadu Bello Stadium will stand for decades as a symbol of partnership, foresight, and responsible public stewardship.
