Kanayo O. Kanayo Urges Nollywood Actors to Avoid Premature ‘Legend’ Labels

Veteran Nollywood actor Kanayo O. Kanayo has sparked renewed conversation within Nigeria’s film industry after cautioning actors against prematurely referring to themselves as legends, warning that such labels can limit personal and professional growth.

“Don’t limit your growth by calling yourself a legend. I’ve done about 400 movies since 1992,” he said, a statement many interpreted as both a reflection on his decades-long journey and a message to younger actors navigating fame and recognition.

Kanayo O. Kanayo, popularly known as KOK, is widely regarded as one of Nollywood’s most enduring and versatile performers. Since his debut in the early 1990s, he has featured in hundreds of films across multiple genres, building a career that spans more than three decades. While he became widely known for ritual-themed roles, the actor has consistently emphasized his range and ability to adapt to diverse characters.

During the interview, Kanayo stressed that humility and ongoing self-development are essential for sustaining relevance in the competitive entertainment industry. He warned that embracing the “legend” title too early can lead to complacency and a false sense of completion.

“The moment you think you are a finished product, you stop improving,” he said, adding that growth in the creative space requires constant self-evaluation and reinvention.

His remarks have resonated with many industry stakeholders, reigniting discussions about mentorship, longevity, and the mindset needed to build a lasting career in Nollywood.
