In the face of escalating violence and attacks by suspected Fulani Herdsmen in Apa and Agatu Local Government Areas (LGAs) of Benue State, Hon. Ojotu Ojema, Member representing Apa/Agatu Federal Constituency in the 10th House of Representatives, and Chairman of the House Standing Committee on National Inland Waterways, has called for the establishment of a Naval Operational Base in Benue State, specifically in Agatu LGA.

According to a statement by Olikita Ekani, Media Aide to the House of Reps Member, Ojema made the call on Friday, while interfacing with the Chief of Naval Staff, Real Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla at the Nigerian Naval Headquarters Abuja.

According to the statement, Hon. Ojema expressed deep concern about the continuous attacks affecting the region. He emphasized the crucial role of agriculture in the nation’s economy, stating that the Federal Government’s security focus should extend beyond the oil sector.

Highlighting the plight of farmers who have abandoned their homes and lands due to insecurity, Hon. Ojema emphasized the resulting impact on food production, leading to surging food prices and a looming food crisis in Nigeria.

He urged the Nigerian Navy to establish an Operational Base in the Riverine axis of Agatu LGA to put an end to the recurring attacks and killings in Apa and Agatu LGAs and to curb the infiltration of criminal elements into the Federal Constituency.

In response, Rear Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla acknowledged his awareness of the security challenges in Benue State, assuring Hon. Ojema that his request would be forwarded to the appropriate authority for further action.

The Chief of Naval Staff commended Ojema for his dedication to ensuring peace and security for his people, expressing optimism that there would be a positive outcome in addressing the ongoing crisis.

Hon. Ojotu Ojema’s proactive advocacy for the establishment of a Naval Operational Base in Benue State reflects a growing concern for the security and well-being of the affected communities, with hopes that such measures will contribute to restoring peace in the region.
