A blind date in China has resurfaced online as a cautionary tale about trust, expectations, and red flags in modern dating. The incident, which occurred in Zhejiang province involved a man who arrived at an upscale restaurant expecting a simple first meeting—only to be met by his date and 23 members of her family.

According to reports, the group immediately began ordering premium dishes without prior discussion, including king crab, abalone, prawns, and bird’s nest soup. As plates kept arriving, the bill rapidly climbed to about 28,000 yuan, estimated at $3,000–$4,000.
Realizing the situation was spiraling, the man excused himself under the pretense of taking a phone call and never returned. The woman later took to social media to accuse him of abandoning her and argued that paying the bill would have proven his seriousness and generosity.
Instead of sympathy, her post triggered widespread backlash. Social media users criticized the move as a deliberate “blind date scam,” a tactic where unsuspecting dates are pressured into covering extravagant meals for large groups. Many praised the man for walking away before being financially trapped.
The viral episode has since become a reference point in online discussions about dating boundaries, consent, and financial expectations. What began as a test of character ended as a public lesson: generosity should never be forced, and trust must be earned—especially on a first date.
