Tinubu Prioritises Fight Against Crime, Matawalle Calls for Unity Beyond Politics, Ethnicity
Minister of State for Defence, Bello Mohammed Matawalle, has undertaken a tour of eastern Sokoto to assess and boost the morale of military personnel involved in Operation ‘Fansan Yamma’ in the northwest region.
During his visit to Gundumi, Isa, Turba, Sabon Birni, and Gatawa, Matawalle reassured residents of the federal government’s continued commitment to addressing the insecurity plaguing the area.
He emphasised that the fight against banditry, terrorism, and ransom kidnapping is a shared responsibility, pointing out that some individuals have failed to take action against these threats due to political and personal interests.
“President Bola Tinubu has accorded priority to the fight against the menaces and ensured the right allocations and support to the sector; however, some people in leadership positions have been abandoning their responsibilities, which have allowed the situation to worsen.
“The fight against these criminalities should be considered beyond politics, religious, or ethnic differences, as it required collective support and collaboration among state governments, traditional institutions, and community members at large,” Matawalle said.
According to him, the deadly fight against banditry is not for the federal government alone because it deserves support from individuals, groups, and stakeholders in order to achieve maximum success.
He noted that there is a need to always promote understanding, eschew political differences and hatred among people, as well as refrain from actions that jeopardise public peace and the Federal Government’s good effort against banditry, terrorism, and kidnappings for ransom.
“I assured you that we shall not condone any misinformation, circulation of fake as well as unsubstantiated reports against our efforts.
“We are aware that some people constitute nuisance, spreading unverified news on banditry and other criminalities that directly or indirectly aided the criminalities,” the Minister pointed out.
He noted that the northern region needs proactive and collaborative supports from all categories of people in order to overcome the security challenges that bedevilled the area and retarded its economic and social developments.
