Health specialists emphasized that while fasting is a significant spiritual obligation for Muslims, individuals living with diabetes must prioritize their health and consult qualified medical professionals before deciding to fast. They noted that diabetes management requires careful monitoring of blood sugar levels, medication timing, and dietary balance — all of which can be affected by prolonged hours without food or water.
According to the experts, diabetic patients are generally classified into low, moderate, or high-risk categories. Those with well-controlled Type 2 diabetes may be able to fast safely under strict medical supervision, while individuals with Type 1 diabetes, unstable blood sugar levels, or complications such as kidney or heart conditions are often advised against fasting due to the risk of hypoglycemia, hyperglycemia, dehydration, and other serious complications.
Doctors recommended pre-Ramadan medical assessments, adjustment of medication schedules, regular blood glucose monitoring during fasting hours, and balanced meals during Suhoor and Iftar. They also advised patients to break their fast immediately if they experience symptoms such as dizziness, confusion, excessive sweating, or extreme weakness.
The experts reiterated that Islamic teachings provide exemptions for individuals whose health may be endangered by fasting, encouraging patients to seek both medical and religious counsel when making their decision.
They urged diabetic Muslims to make informed choices, stressing that preserving health remains paramount during the holy month.
