NEMA Receives 165 Nigerian Returnees from Libya in Lagos

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Lagos Operations Office, has received 165 Nigerian returnees from Tripoli, Libya, as part of the ongoing Assisted Voluntary Return (AVR) programme facilitated by the International Organization for Migration (IOM).

The returnees arrived on Tuesday, March 3, 2026, at about 5:13 p.m. aboard an Al Buraq Airlines flight (registration number 5A-BAC) at the Cargo Terminal of Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos. The reception exercise was conducted in collaboration with the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons.

According to officials, the group comprised 115 adults, including 16 males and 99 females, 39 children made up of 16 males and 23 females, as well as 20 infants consisting of 16 males and four females.

Upon arrival, personnel of the Nigeria Immigration Service carried out biometric registration and documentation of the returnees to ensure accurate records and facilitate their reintegration into society.

To address the immediate needs of the returnees, NEMA and its partners provided humanitarian assistance, including food, potable water, medical care, and ambulance services for those requiring urgent health attention. Additional support such as luggage handling, logistics assistance, counselling, and coordination services was also provided to ensure a smooth and dignified reception process.

The exercise underscores the Federal Government’s commitment to ensuring the safe, humane, and orderly return of Nigerian citizens stranded abroad. It also highlights the importance of collaboration among relevant agencies in supporting the reintegration of returning migrants.

NEMA reaffirmed its dedication to safeguarding the welfare of Nigerians and promoting safe migration practices in line with national and international humanitarian standards.
