Lieutenant Ofodile, an aerospace engineer with the Nigerian Air Force, led the design of the Tsaigumi Tactical UAV, a project widely seen as a turning point in Nigeria’s quest for technological self-reliance in military aviation. The UAV was officially unveiled in 2018 following a strategic collaboration between the Nigerian Air Force and Portuguese defence technology firm UAVision.
Designed for Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) missions, the Tsaigumi Tactical UAV is capable of operating across both land and maritime environments, significantly enhancing Nigeria’s defence, security monitoring, and operational awareness.
The project is regarded as a landmark achievement in Nigeria’s aerospace and defence sector, demonstrating the country’s growing capacity to design and deploy advanced military technology using local expertise. At the centre of the achievement is Lieutenant Ofodile, whose deep knowledge of avionic and control systems played a critical role in the UAV’s successful development.
Lieutenant Ofodile holds a PhD in Control Engineering from the University of Leicester, United Kingdom, with specialisation in control systems—an essential component of UAV design and operation. Her technical contributions have earned her national and international recognition as one of Nigeria’s leading figures in aerospace innovation.
Beyond its technological impact, the achievement also highlights the expanding role of Nigerian women in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), as well as in defence innovation. Lieutenant Ofodile’s career stands as a powerful example of breaking barriers in traditionally male-dominated fields.
The success of the Tsaigumi Tactical UAV underscores Nigeria’s increasing ability to develop indigenous defence systems and reinforces the country’s long-term vision of achieving greater self-sufficiency in military technology through home-grown innovation and expertise.
