Nigeria on 15 January 2026 paid solemn tribute to its fallen heroes as President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, represented by the Vice President, led the nation at the Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day (AFCRD) Parade and Wreath-Laying Ceremony held at the National Arcade, Abuja.

The ceremony, conducted with full military honours and led by the Commander, Guards Brigade, brought together the Minister of Defence, Chief of Defence Staff, Service Chiefs, the Inspector General of Police, senior government officials, and other national dignitaries. The event reflected the deep-rooted traditions of the Armed Forces and provided a moment of national reflection on the courage, loyalty, and sacrifices of personnel who gave their lives in defence of the country.
Proceedings began with the sounding of the Last Post, followed by prayers for the nation, serving personnel, and fallen heroes. A minute of silence was observed in honour of gallant members of the Armed Forces and other security services who paid the supreme price in the line of duty. Artillery gun salutes followed, setting the tone for the wreath-laying ceremony in honour of the fallen.
The solemn rites continued with the firing of three ceremonial volleys by the firing party and the sounding of the Reveille, symbolising honour, remembrance, and the enduring values of service and sacrifice. Each sequence reinforced the nation’s gratitude to those who stood in defence of Nigeria’s sovereignty and peace.
In further recognition of the significance of the occasion, the Vice President and other senior officials signed the AFCRD Anniversary Register, formally recording the nation’s remembrance and appreciation. The ceremony concluded with the release of pigeons into the sky, a symbolic gesture representing peace, hope, unity, and national renewal.
As the parade drew to a close, the ceremony reaffirmed Nigeria’s unwavering resolve to remember its heroes, honour their sacrifices, and uphold the ideals of service, patriotism, and selfless devotion for which they laid down their lives.
