By Matthew Eloyi
The Minister of State for Defence, Dr. Bello Matawalle, has reaffirmed the Federal Government’s gratitude to the nation’s fallen heroes who sacrificed their lives for Nigeria’s unity and peace.
Matawalle made this statement during the inauguration of the National Planning Committee for the 2025 Armed Forces Remembrance Day Celebration (AFRDC).
The announcement was contained in a press release issued by Mr. Henshaw Ogubike, Director of Information and Public Relations at the Ministry of Defence.
The Armed Forces Remembrance Day, observed annually on January 15, is dedicated to honouring the nation’s departed heroes and recognising the contributions of living veterans. It also serves as a moment to appreciate all security agencies that safeguard Nigeria’s sovereignty.
Represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dr Ibrahim Kana, the minister urged the committee to commence preparations for the 2025 event, encouraging members to introduce initiatives that would reflect the patriotism and sacrifice of Nigeria’s fallen heroes.
“The Federal Government remains grateful to this category of Nigerians who laid their lives to guarantee the corporate existence of this country,” Matawalle said.
“They have given their lives for the peace and security of our dear nation and are therefore worthy of being celebrated as a mark of appreciation. We must ensure that this event honours their work and inspires future generations to continue this noble service,” he added.
Key events leading up to the 2025 celebrations include a ministerial briefing, the Nigerian Legion Humanitarian Day, the President’s Emblem Appeal Launch, Juma’at prayers, an interdenominational church service, and the traditional wreath-laying ceremony scheduled for January 15, 2025.
The committee members, drawn from various government ministries, departments, and agencies, are tasked with ensuring a successful and meaningful remembrance event.
