Nigerian Army Refutes Allegations of Impropriety Against Chief of Logistics

In a recent development, the Nigerian Army has responded to what it deems a smear campaign by Sahara Reporters, denying allegations against Major General Erema Akerejola, the Chief of Logistics (Army), regarding the acquisition of a million-dollar property in the United States.

The Nigerian Army expressed deep concern over what it perceives as a deliberate attempt to mislead the public and tarnish the reputation of General Akerejola through unfounded claims of acquiring the US property with proceeds from contract scams.

In a detailed response, signed by the Army Puic Relations Director, Brigadier General Onyema Nwachukwu, the Nigerian Army clarified that the property in question was acquired 12 years ago through a monthly mortgage, a commitment still being upheld by Mrs Akerejola, who has resided and worked in the US for the past 19 years. The assertion that the property owner hails from a humble background is considered an affront to hardworking Nigerians who have overcome challenging circumstances to achieve success.

Importantly, the Nigerian Army pointed out the deliberate omission of the year the property was acquired, in the report, emphasising that General Akerejola assumed the position of Chief of Logistics of the Nigerian Army only about six months ago, long after the property was acquired. The absence of concrete evidence in the story, relying solely on unnamed sources, raises questions about the credibility of the allegations.

The Nigerian Army accused Sahara Reporters of publishing such unsubstantiated claims with the aim of causing disaffection within the Army, emphasising its commitment to maintaining the highest standards of integrity and condemning corruption or fraudulent activities within its ranks.

Expressing regret over the baseless accusations against General Akerejola, the Nigerian Army highlighted his distinguished record of service, professionalism, and dedication to duty throughout his career. The public is urged to exercise caution and refrain from spreading false information that could damage the reputation of individuals dedicated to national service.

The Nigerian Army implores the media to uphold the highest level of professionalism by disseminating accurate and verified information to the public. As the Army remains committed to its mission of protecting the nation’s territorial integrity, it assures thorough investigations into any allegations of wrongdoing within its ranks, with appropriate actions taken in accordance with the law. The Army calls for public encouragement and support for troops engaged in defending the nation, emphasising its commitment to transparency and integrity.
