Nigerian Army Trains Drivers to Boost Operations in South South

The Nigerian Army has inaugurated a Drivers’ Basic Course for its personnel in the South South region, as part of its efforts to improve its operations and combat the menace of improvised explosive devices.

The course, which was organised by the 6 Division of the Nigerian Army/ Land Component Commander, Joint Task Force, Operation DELTA SAFE, was launched by the General Officer Commanding (GOC), Major General Jamal Abdussalam, on February 13, 2024, at the 6 Division Training School in Port Harcourt.

Major General Abdussalam said the course was aimed at ensuring that the army drivers were physically, psychologically and ethically fit to drive vehicles in the Nigerian Army. He said the army wanted to have drivers who were responsible, careful and able to maintain vehicles. He urged the participants to take advantage of the training and become good drivers, who would be useful to the army, themselves and the society. He also warned them against drug abuse, saying that as drivers, they had the lives of others in their hands, and they should consider it a privilege to serve. He added that the training was in line with the directive of the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) for the army divisions to build capacities to enhance operations.

The Commander of the 76 Supply and Transport Brigade, Brigadier General Kingsley Inyang, said the course was the first of its kind to be organised in the 6 Division. He said it was in line with the mission statement of the GOC, which was “To have a Proactive and Result-oriented Attitude amongst Officers and Soldiers of 6 Division for Sustainable Operational Tempo in a Joint Environment.”

Brigadier General Inyang said the driving training was intended to develop a result-oriented attitude among the students, while building capacity to sustain the tempo of operations in the 6 Division. He said the training objectives were to increase the number of trained drivers in the 6 Division, and to enable them to acquire basic driving skills, as well as enhance transportation capability and vehicle maintenance standards of the formations and units in the 6 Division. He said 30 students were drawn from different formations and units to participate in the 12-week course, which would consist of instructional and practical lectures, and would culminate in practical driving sessions.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by commanders of the 6 Division affiliated formations and units, as well as staff officers. The highlights of the event were the presentation of a souvenir to the GOC by the Commander of the 76 Supply and Transport Brigade, the inspection of the Drivers Training Wing, and a group photograph.
