Nigeria’s Dwindling Revenue Requires Urgent Reforms — FIRS Chairman Zacch Adedeji

The Executive Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), Dr. Zacch Adedeji, has raised concerns over Nigeria’s declining revenue, stressing that urgent and strategic reforms are needed to stabilize the nation’s fiscal landscape.

Adedeji stated that the country can no longer rely on traditional revenue sources, noting that current economic realities demand a modern, technology-driven, and more transparent tax administration system.

According to him, strengthening revenue generation is crucial to funding national development, improving public services, and reducing Nigeria’s reliance on borrowing. He emphasized that reforming tax processes, widening the tax net, and promoting voluntary compliance are key steps toward achieving long-term fiscal sustainability.

Adedeji also reaffirmed the FIRS’s commitment to partnering with stakeholders—including businesses, government agencies, and development partners—to build a more efficient and fair tax system that supports economic growth.

He assured Nigerians that the Service is rolling out new initiatives aimed at simplifying tax payments, blocking leakages, and ensuring that every eligible taxpayer contributes their fair share to national development.
