North West, the 12-year-old daughter of reality TV star Kim Kardashian and rapper Kanye West, has made her debut on Instagram under her own name, drawing widespread attention and reigniting discussions about celebrity children and social media exposure.

The new account, which went live on Friday, features a debut post captioned simply, “first post.” The image shows North posing in a stylish yet edgy outfit — a black Balenciaga short-sleeve jersey paired with a ribbed miniskirt, layered necklaces and bracelets, and tall black boots adorned with silver chains. She flashed double peace signs and looked away from the camera, with the photo appearing intentionally blurry and artistic.
Although the account bio states that it is “managed by parents,” North’s presence on social media has long been a point of contention between her famous parents. Kanye West, 48, has previously voiced strong opposition to his children having social media accounts. In a 2022 video that resurfaced online in October, the rapper publicly criticized Kim Kardashian, 45, saying he did not want his daughter “to be used by TikTok” and expressing concerns over her online exposure.
The issue resurfaced again last year when North appeared in videos on a joint TikTok account she shares with her mother. In the clips, she wore fake facial tattoos, a faux nose ring, grillz, blue contact lenses, and long blue braids — a look that sparked mixed reactions online. While some viewers dismissed it as harmless self-expression or a Halloween costume, others questioned whether the content was appropriate for a child her age.
Despite the controversy, North continues to attract public interest as the eldest child of two of the world’s most influential celebrities. With her own Instagram account now live, questions remain about how closely it will be supervised and how much influence each parent will have over her online presence.
