In his opening remarks, Governor Yahaya urged members to rise above differences and act decisively in the interest of both the region and the nation. He noted improvements in security across parts of Northern Nigeria but stressed that there was no room for complacency.
“The safety of our people remains the foundation upon which all development rests. We must sustain and intensify efforts to consolidate gains by neutralizing emerging threats,” Yahaya said.
Highlighting institutional reforms within the NSGF, he stated that the forum is now positioned to enhance coordination, ensure continuity, and improve capacity for strategic engagements and policy implementation. “Our efforts towards strengthening and restructuring the Northern States Governors Forum are bearing fruit. We must continue to take on greater responsibilities in shaping the future of Northern Nigeria,” he added.
Governor Yahaya commended states that have already contributed N1 billion monthly to the regional security fund and encouraged others to follow suit. He also emphasized the need for each state to nominate trustees to the fund to improve oversight and governance.
Praising President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for advancing reforms such as state policing, Yahaya called on the NSGF to support initiatives aimed at securing the region. He further highlighted that challenges like illiteracy, poverty, unemployment, and underdevelopment remain key drivers of insecurity, stressing that massive investment in education, human capital, and economic opportunities is essential for lasting peace.
Concluding, the chairman urged forum members to engage in open and sincere deliberations to build a safer, stronger, and more prosperous Northern Nigeria. “The unity demonstrated by our forum is our greatest strength. The people’s expectations are high, and we cannot afford to fail,” he said.
